At Local Elections, attempts are always made to focus on national issues, in order to cloud your judgement when local issues are not being addressed.

Out of your current three Councillors, there has been a failing to address any of the issues facing the people of Newtown.
A another walkabout as recent as yesterday, one could see the building up of rubbish again in communal area's especially where there are maisonette blocks and tower blocks.

Do remember my background is Housing management and it is not rocket science to deal with these issues, with stringent investigations and proper enforcement, however, if you are not in  touch with you the residents then it is actually futile.

You need to make the right choice on 3rd May 2018, as the only way I can fight for Newtown effectively in by being elected to represent and serve you. I will not be hiding away, and I am sure many of you know who I am and in fact many of you have been in touch.

I will be arranging to have quarterly inspection of Multi-Storey Blocks and also Maisonette block in Newtown checking for the cleanliness internally and externally, along with addressing the serious anti-social behaviour some of it quite sensitive, that is impacting upon your daily lives.

Remember, these are local elections and you need public servants who are willing and able to deal with then issues that impact upon you daily in Newtown.

Change is here, you need to be served. It is your time be heard and make it count by voting for Desmond Jaddoo on Thursday 3rd May 2018 for your Local Councillor in Newtown.

Do get in touch and remember I am here for "everyone and not the chosen few".

Newtown News: A joined approach for progress.

It has been clear that Newtown does not require just attention; it actually requires a multi agency approach towards regeneration, be it, socially, economically with community safety and also focussing on educational achievements and employment/enterprise opportunities.

This can be done with a multi agency approach alongside a strategic plan in order to address the issues being faced by resident in an intensive manner.

Clearly, chucking a few pounds and a few plasters over a large crack has not been working.

Electing e as your local Councillor on may 3rd, will bring this approach to dealing with Newtown. Time and Time again Newtown has been let down and this has led to you the residents just not being interested in Elections. Now you have an opportunity to change things for the better in Newtown. The time for remaining at home during elections have now ended and ensure that on Thursday 3rd May 2018 that you go to your local Polling Station and vote for Desmond Jaddoo.

Currently, you have been let down by your three Councillors and should you wish for this to continue then do nothing.

However, if you wish to create a brighter, cleaner, greener, safer,  cohesive future for all then your have only one choice and that is to vote for Desmond Jaddoo on 3rd May.

Easter Sunday is a time for prayer and reflection in the Christian Faith. Newtown is a very diverse area of faiths and culture. The main thing we have in common is that we are all God's children.
May I take this opportunity of wishing you all a Happy Easter.

Do take note; that with all that I have done in the communities of Birmingham, I have been and continue to be accessible and available all year round.

Whilst we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ today, let us also make a pact to resurrect Newtown for all. You have a choice to make on Thursday 3rd may at the Ballot Box, it's time for your voices to be heard, no more silence.

Newtown News: Community Facilities

31/3/2018

With an uncertain future looming not only over The Drum despite been for sale to Community groups at present and also Newtown Community Centre. This has highlighted a major concern raised by residents of the lack of Community Facilities in the area.

There are individuals , groups and organisations, that are now leaving the area owing to the lack of facilities for even a meeting.

We are aware of facilities at St. Georges Church and NOT The Hub which is now very expensive to hire, along with Pannel croft Village along with CCOGIC and Mount Zion Community Church and the As-Suffa Institute.

However, the actual community facilities are diminishing.

I do believe that the current local Councillors have been to compliant in this reduction of Community facilities and have not taken any notice of what you the people of Newtown have had to say on this.

Clearly, this is unacceptable, however, thankfully I have heard you and pledge to fight for better Community facilities in Newtown for all.

At a time when we should be promoting Unity in our Community, it is difficult to move the agenda forward when there is a shortage of facilities which are local and easily accessible within the Newtown Ward.

Do feel free to get in touch and voice your concerns to me; I am mindful that whilst it is now the Easter break, the Summer Holidays will upon us in now time and we need to have structured Community activities for everyone, in order to ensure that loitering if kept to a minimum.

I am available and ready to be of service to "everyone and not the chosen few".

Newtown News: Branded a Persistent Complainant, after complaining about Rubbish.

28/3/2018

It has been brought to my attention that a resident of Newtown has been allegedly branded a persistent complainant
after writing several letters to the Council; regarding the state of Newtown and the continual site of rubbish with has blighted the daily lives of the people.

Clearly, instead of making efforts to clear the rubbish and get on top of the fly tipping issue, by working with residents, this poor individual has been branded basically an unjustified complainer.

Sadly, also there has been no real strategy forthcoming from the current Local Councillors which has been a constant feature of the tenure.

Well, just to let you know I will not brand you a persistent complainant and in fact will welcome your input and am quite happy to work in partnership with you the people of Newtown.

Newtown News: What are the changes in this years Local Election.

28/3/2018

Many people are asking me as to the changes in this Year's Local Elections and the difference between single new wards and two member wards.

As a part of my regular Tuesday radio broadcast on Newstyle Radio 98.7FM where we do provide particularly election and voter registration information to the public, as written question was sent to Head of Birmingham Elections Office Robert Connelly whom responded as follows:

  1. What is significantly different with the Election on 3rd May?
Unlike in previous years when a third of all councillors were up for re-election, this year will see the whole council up for election on new ward boundaries.
Previously the City was divided into 40 wards but from may there will be 69.
  1. How many single members wards are there and how many two members wards?
There are 37 single wards and 32 two member wards.
  1. In the two member wards will people be having two votes?
Yes – However if you prefer you can vote for one candidate only
  1. Can people vote if they are not registered?
No – if you want to vote you must be registered.
  1. How can people register to vote and what is the deadline?
The deadline for people to register is Tuesday 17th April. If you have received a poll card (which you should be receiving over the next couple of days) then you are registered and you DO NOT need to re-register.
  1. If people have problems getting to the Polling stations or are working long shifts on polling day, what alternatives are available such as postal votes?
You can apply for either a postal vote or appoint a proxy. A proxy is someone who can vote on your behalf  and should therefore be someone you know and trust.
  1. What is the deadline for requesting a postal vote.
To request a postal vote or to appoint a proxy you must firstly be registered as a voter yourself. Therefore you must make sure you have registered by 17th April and then to apply for a postal vote the deadline is 5.00pm on Wednesday 18th April.
The deadline to apply for a proxy vote (other than an emergency proxy) is 5pm on Wednesday 25th April.
  1. How many Councillors will be elected?
Following the recent Local Government Boundary Review it was decided to reduce the number of councillors from the current 120 to 101.
  1. When and where will the count take place?
The count for the City Council elections will be on Friday 4th May and the counting for Sutton Coldfield Town Council will be on Saturday 5th May.
  1. When do you anticipate the result of the election to be made public?
We anticipate that the results will be declared throughout the day on the Friday, with the single member wards likely to be finished earlier than those where there are dual vacancies. The first results are likely to be available from lunchtime.
The results will be available on the Council’s website as soon as they are known. Simply go to birmingham.gov.uk
  1. How long will be the term of the new council and councillors?
All 101 councillors will be elected for a 4 year term and therefore the next scheduled City Council elections after May will be in May 2022
  1. Anything else you wish to add?
As a result of the Local Government Boundary Review it possible that the name of your ward has changed. Also it has meant that a number of polling stations have had to be changed as well and therefore you cannot assume that if you vote in person that your polling station will be the same as in previous years.
Therefore before you go to vote make sure you check the location of your polling station either on your official paper poll card or go on line at birmingham.gov.uk/elections and enter your post code in the polling station look up facility to find out the name of your ward and where your polling station is located.
Don’t forget it’s Your Birmingham Your Vote.

You can register to vote here.

Newtown News: What going on in my Tower Block??

27/3/2018

Picture
For some time now, residents of Inkerman House Newtown which the large block in Newtown Shopping Centre have been concerned about thee comings and going in there block.

During the day their stair well of which there are three, are occupied by youngster and particularly children from schools which are not in the area, that are getting up to no good.

Despite the complaints of residents this appears to be going unchallenged.

In the evening there older ones take over and it is then a den for drug dealing and use.

Clearly, a residential block with young parents and children being exposed to these elements is totally unacceptable.

Therefore, I have arranged to visit the block formally next week and conduct a block inspection with the residents, bringing back my days at Birmingham Housing Department.

Whilst appreciating that the Housing Department will be commencing a major refurbishment of Inkerman House, these issues require dealing with in  a coordinated manner.

These construction in the 1960's were built to replace the slums and without effective and joined up action where next?

Well, be encouraged I am certain that together we will make a difference.

Newtown News: No-one has knocked my door since 1991.

26/3/2018

On Saturday whilst out I knocked a door of house, in close proximity close to the Aston Expressway.

A gentleman answered the door and said that you are the first person to drop a leaflet or knock my door since 1991.

Clearly, this epitomises the mass disaffection in the area and the actual low turnouts in areas such as Newtown. The fact are also, that this Gentleman's house backing onto the Aston expressway has been suffering noise pollution for several years in probably the most  congested area of the City.

Following a conversation with him; this has new been raised and importantly, for him he has not just seen a picture on a poster or flier, however, the individual that knocked his door. hence not a cardboard "cut out".

Clearly, the Newtown ward has lacked not only representation, but that all important visibility to ensure conti9nual Community engagement. Elect me as you local Councillor will ensure this, and I can promise it will not take another 26 years for your door to be knocked.

Do get in touch and I am here for "everyone and not the chosen few".

Newtown News: You have been heard and we have started to keep Newtown tidy. A

25/3/2018

Keeping Newtown tidy is a work in progress that will take some time.

Owing to the lack of Leadership and direction over many years the area has become as some residents describe it dirty.

Well help is on its at, yesterday, with the assistance of the local houses of faith and residents the Burlington Street and Parliament street areas ending up looking like the pictures in this blog. The filled bags of rubbish were also collected by waste management.
It was not only a pick but the streets were also swept and the overhanging bushes blocking the pavements were also cut.

This is one of the ways forward in improving the area and lets work together. Many of the residents; would have had my leaflet by now and you know what you have to do on Thursday 3rd may 2018 and that is to vote for me, if you seek positive change in Newtown.
This is the beginning and lets work together to make Newtown, brighter, greener, brighter and a place of opportunity for all.

I am here for
"everyone and not the chosen few"
