Many commentators in the past week have said with the laying to rest of Nelson Mandela yesterday signalled the end of the journey.
One should understand that it is not the end but the beginning of a new era and the continuation of the work has been started on the road to change.
Issues surrounding poverty, employment, education, law and order just to name a few still be to be tackled.
However the key element of freedom and democracy must not be taken for granted and there have been many sacrifices.
Some say that a light has gone out, but, I believe than an eternal light is now shining over the people of South Africa a nation united through the power of forgiveness and reconciliation.
A lesson that we should learn here in the UK and indeed Birmingham is a simple one, we have the power to bring about change also, but, we seem reluctant to use it.
Facing increasing poverty, reliance on food banks and seeing how public funds are being used in Birmingham without no imagination on how to utilise the brand Birmingham in order to bring money into the City Council to assist public expenditure is beyond me.
We need bold leadership that will not tolerate under performance of the highly paid, that will cut off over priced outsourced contracts and spend the public funds in this City wisely as it were their own
We need new faces on our City Council, note what I’ve said our City Council, the oppression that many of us face is psychological, as we are made to feel that we are powerless.
The time has come to say no more and we should be taking stock from the journey of the people of South Africa, the sacrifices of all including their leaders imprisoned and killed for asking to be treated equally.
We do not face these barriers and our City’s future and importantly your future is in your own hands.
As we say Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela and thank God for lending him to the world, the time has come for us here in Birmingham to demand change by putting fresh faces on our City Council.
May 2014, at the Local Elections you can have you say by using your vote to send a clear message about who is really in control.
Make sure that you register to vote, get to know your candidates, let them know that you will hold them to account and vote for the person that you believe you can connect with.
We the people must always come first.
