Last week when I tweeted a story about Birmingham City Councillors, plan to veto an Independent Review into Senior Councillor allowances recommending a cut of £100,000; the first thing I saw were a load of excuses and that the fighting spirit of us all being in this together.
Yesterdays announcement of 6000 further job cuts over the next 4 years, clearly demonstrates the opposite and who will veto this?
Once again it is the people that will suffer, Birmingham is a ticking time bomb with the impact of Central Government Cuts, a compliant Council Leadership, the equal pay fiasco which has literally bankrupted the city alongside the highly expensive contractors that are providing council services and make large profits at the expense of all in this city, including the poor and vulnerable.
Hence the latest plan to plunge individuals and families on the bread line.
Clearly, things need to change in this City at a time when disaffection is increasing, some elected members feel that they are above the electorate with no accountability and the our children being failed totally when it comes to their safety and education.
We also see terrible housing conditions in Birmingham despite the wealth of development in the City Centre in comparison to the ever increasing of ghettos in other areas. A time when mental health is on the increase along with drug abuse, whilst many are now relying on foodbanks, some living very close some of Birmingham wealth. Not to mention the serious issue of health inequalities especially based on postcode which is also increasing.
The lack of access to services, with Neighbourhood Office closures. People being requested to telephone, but their credit runs out whilst listening to a load of information which they did not call about in the first place. Do it online, when not all are computer literate or indeed have access to a computer, then being told go to your local, library where access is free, however, I forgot to say some of these are being closed.
We can play the blame game as much as we want, however, it does not help the people of Birmingham when we see the increase of waste of our street being dumped and nothing being done about it.
Yes, it is Central Government that has cut funds to Birmingham, however, how much money is still being wasted by funding the profiteers, who do not even source their staff locally.
Do not be fooled by the spin, we do have a compliant Council Leadership that is not listening to the people of this City and the fact that they are not prepared to pave the way by reducing allowances paid to Senior Councillors some who indeed have 2 or 3 jobs speaks volumes, at a time when many who have only one source of income, being their employment with Birmingham City Council face an uncertain and demoralising future.
Things are changing but in which direction, who is listening to the people of this City, but the bigger question is do they really care?
