Having this week been a member of the Panel and Speaking at The House of Commons Public Debate on Stop n Search hosted by Diane Abbott MP, it was very clear that this was a major issue that affected 18-24 year old's and was seen as a tool of oppression that was fueling the disaffection by this group of young people.
To date despite the reforms that have been introduced, how be it on a voluntary basis by various Police forces, the issue of the behaviour of the Officer's conducting these searches is still being called into question.
It was made clear that when complaints were made these fell of deaf ears, hence, creating a them and us society, which does not assist with the Political Engagement of 18-24 year old's as some of them see themselves be targeted in a know your place campaign.
It is also well known that at times this introduces our young people to Police Cells, who are later on released without charge in my view for which we are researching the figures at present. Commonly known as "The Treatment".
Clearly, to date non of the Political Parties want to talk about stop n search, hence one would question on their commitment in engaging with this mass disaffected in a meaningful manner in order to get them voting, as I can clearly see that, should one be bold enough to listen and champion this cause on behalf of Young People especially, then they would see the need for their involvement in the Political Process.
A successful Politician who is committed to change must be prepared to leave their comfort zone connect withe the issues that affect the people that they serve.
Well, Diane Abbott MP has committed to her constituents to take this forward, my message especially to the people of Birmingham that feel strongly about this issue of which there are many, should take this up with their MP's or those who want to be their MP.
They want your vote, then let them earn it.
