Watching the film Selma you couldn't help feeling the emotion of the struggle that Black America faced in their quest for not just equality, but, also social justice in a time of serious oppression and to imagine that this happened only 50 years ago is alarming.
A film that highlight the true grit and determination of people to bring about change; the sacrifice of human life, the sacrifice of family life in order to bring about all-important basic human rights that many desperately seek.
Today we see many issues in front of us, however there are times when we sidestep then instead of dealing with them head-on.
Selma highlighted the fact that people who sought change, were prepared to make a stand for that change they were prepared to face the punishment that was dished out at them in order to amplify their fight for freedom.
Their stand led to worldwide publicity and others from all races and religions joined them in their quest for Justice and also some were brutally murdered, for sharing the commonality of human dignity. Furthermore, the forging of a united front or alliances showing people of many faces was a powerful tool, that spoke volumes.
We not only saw in the end an 84-year-old man becoming one of the first people black people to register to vote and voting Selma, many of the oppressors were removed from office by the power of the black vote.
We we saw Black Americans become Congressmen, City Mayors, Police Chiefs which today pave the way for a Black American President.
Clearly the message that comes from watching Selma in my view, was once the world saw the persecution that the people of Selma faced by malking a stand for a basic right, ie. wanting to register to vote and vote; hundreds and thousands descended upon Selma for the main March, which consolidated the cliche of "United We Stand".
Change can come but it takes like-minded people to work together without fear, in order to create that change that we see.
Change comes at a price and that price is called "UNITY".
