Dear Councillor Ward
Further to my previous email to you, it is being rumoured that I was consulted regarding the name change of Handsworth Leisure Centre to Nelson Mandela Health & Well Being Centre.
I must make it clear that I was not consulted and under no circumstances could I have given any consent as I am not in a position to do so anyway, in addition this is a community matter, which would require greater and wider consultation.
Indeed a consultation could have been done through the Connecting Communities Show on Newstyle Radio as we started on Tuesday.
I am therefore clarifying my position and also reiterate the fact that on a personal note, I do not see the renaming of Handsworth Leisure Centre to be an appropriate tribute and explained in my previous email.
I think it may be prudent for you clarify, what if any consultation has taken place?
I have been exposed to this City's lack of racial tolerance and harmony, owing to some of the racist responses and comments directed at me. This demonstrates that as a City we have a long way to go with regard to race relations.
I believe a way forward would be for you to meet members of the Community and discuss a more appropriate tribute.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
