National Knife Bin Surrender/Recycling Programme to be Launched in Birmingham
“Save A Life Surrender Your Knife”
In recent months Birmingham Empowerment Forum formed a Knife Steering Committee, working with other community partners and also with British Ironworks from Owestry, who are developing a national knife surrender programme, which is the brain child of their Managing Director Clive Knowles.
The purpose is not only just knife surrender, but, also a recycling programme with purpose; hence, their intention to build a 24ft “Angelic Statue” as a National monument in memory of those who have lost their lives to knife crime, including many of the young people over the past 18 months.
Working with other partners also, we will be able to effectively signpost anyone in need of help, to our developing community partners.
This programme is about joining up those desperately needed dots, with existing organisations.
The Knife Bin will be unveiled on Friday 22nd August 2014, at The Hub Holford Drive Perry Barr Birmingham B42 2TU opposite the Perry Barr Recycling Depot.
This is a newly developed Sports Hub with over 1000 visitors per week and provision in being made in order to offer intervention to anyone requiring help.
The unveiling will be carried out by Deputy Lord Mayor Mike Leddy and Councillor Paulette Hamilton “ Birminghams Mental Health Champion”, along with the mothers of the victims of knife crime.
This scheme is supported by many of the families of the victims of knife crime including Alison Cope mother of the late Josh Ribera aka “Deptzman”. Other families will be attending on the day including the parents of Christina Edkins, who have also been invited..
The event which includes a mini fun day for the family, barbecue, refreshments and a football match will commence at 11.00am until 3.00pm, with the unveiling of the bin at 12 noon.
This scheme is about saving lives, whilst developing responsibility starting at home with the safe disposal of knives.
“The important point to note is that one knife less in our neighbourhoods is potentially less victim, as it only takes one knife to create a tragedy, as we are all well aware.”
