The past 12 months have been challenging to say the least. When one looks at the divisions that exist in our City of which we are suppose to be one community, it’s hard to believe how we function.
My mission as many of you know by now has been to empower people on their collective ability to invoke the desperately needed change in our City, through holding those in power to account in addition to taking up key and important civic Duties alongside stressing the need to ensure that they are registered to vote as it is the preparation that counts.
I was reflecting today by reading through some of my blog entries and I notice that I have been slightly busy.
The fact is that a lot of work has been done, but, in all honesty it has not even been started yet as we do face so many challenges in the forthcoming year.
We have seen MLK 50 reflecting on that famous speech and March on Washington led by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.; which culminated in a visit and speech at the new Library by Reverend Jesse Jackson, which was opened by the heroic Malala Yusafzai.
The City was also visited by the son of Jamaica’s first National Hero Dr. Julius Garvey MD one the world’s leading Vascular Surgeons.
We saw the death of Nelson Mandela, the man that changed a nation.
But alongside this we saw the many injustices that plague us, health inequalities, increase in poverty due to Cuts and greater reliance on food banks, poor relations with the Police, increasing disaffection, redundancies, unemployment and the immigration war; the list could go on.
However the most alarming thing is that Politicians both locally and nationally are not listening to the people.
My key 2014 message is on of demanding equality and justice for all irrespective of who you are.
My message is a simple one prepare yourself for 22nd May 2014 when you the people can send a clear message that you want change at the Local Elections. I think you may be in for some surprises, but, as ever you must be prepared to play your part by ensuring that you are registered to vote and use it.
Take a moment to have a look at my blog entries and let me know what you think.
The key thing is that your opinion and views counts and I want to know what they are.
But simply this time of the year is about family and the challenge that we have faced it is the unity that has carried us thus far. We have a long way to go, so let us all come together and face 2014 together. As many party tonight let the spirit of the moment when Big Ben sends its loud bells across the country we keep it going.
We have a busy year ahead and its time to get the boots on 2013 has been the warm up, it’s now time to get on with the task ahead.
I pray good blessings upon you and your family and wish you all a happy, prosperous, peaceful and constructive 2014.
Happy New Year.
